Not just a cattle dog with less tail
The Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog is a distinct breed and a cousin of the Australian Cattle Dog. Its outline is squarer and lighter, with longer legs and a naturally short tail. Some Stumpies are born with longer tails, but the classic breed feature is a natural bobtail.
Stumpy myth: “They are just Blue Heelers with docked tails.” Nope. Separate breed, separate standard, separate history.
Why they act like tiny supervisors
Stumpies were selected to notice movement, make quick decisions, and control cattle. In a home, that can look like shadowing their person, studying every routine, sounding alarms, inventing jobs, and treating a closed door as a personal challenge. Their intelligence works best when it has an outlet.

Daily essentials: physical exercise, sniffing, training, problem-solving, and time with their person. Short sessions of hide-and-seek, scent games, trick training, retrieving, and structured adventures can tire the brain as well as the legs.
